A simple yet touching Chinese expression of concern — “Let me know when you are safely home” — traveled thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean to warm the heart of an American adventurer. Thirty-one-year-old Kelsey Pfendler received sincere and touching kindness from a Chinese cargo ship captain amid her tough, 2,400-mile rowing voyage across the Pacific.
For 30 days, Pfendler has navigated the Pacific alone aboard a 24-foot fiberglass boat. She embarked on her journey from Monterey, California, on May 21, with Hawaii’s Oahu Island as her final destination, covering a total distance of 2,400 miles. According to outdoor and sports news platform Outside Online, a successful finish will make her the first American female to complete a solo row from California to Hawaii. Keeping up with her current sailing rhythm, she is also on track to set new records as the youngest person and the fastest female to accomplish this feat.
On her official website yourowkelsey.com, Pfendler stated that she is striving to make history as the first and youngest American woman to row solo across the Mid Pacific. Beyond pursuing a personal athletic milestone, her courageous voyage also serves a charitable purpose: she hopes to raise donations for an organization dedicated to safeguarding the health and overall well-being of Grand Canyon river guides.
Throughout her arduous ocean crossing, Pfendler has consistently documented her adventure on social media, sharing real-time updates of her geographic position, daily schedule
“My boat was moving extremely slowly, and the crew were afraid I might be in trouble out here at sea,” Pfendler recounted in the video. “They radioed me to check if I was safe and doing well. We had a wonderful 10-minute radio chat. At first, they were confused about my solo rowing mission, and then they grew concerned that I might run short of food and drinking water. I told them I was fully prepared and safe.” She added that the captain and his crew were incredibly warm, supportive and encouraging, and their kindness became a bright spot during her grueling journey.
During their conversation, Captain He asked for Pfendler’s email address, promising to follow up with her in 20 days to confirm that she arrives safely in Hawaii.
The heartening video quickly went viral on Chinese social media, sparking widespread praise and warm comments from netizens. Internet users admired Pfendler’s extraordinary courage to take on the challenging solo voyage and spoke highly of Captain He’s thoughtful kindness. Many netizens noted that his considerate concern embodies the understated, sincere way Chinese people show care for others. The comment section was filled with blessings for Pfendler’s journey and quiet pride in the Chinese captain’s gracious gesture.
Online users shared countless touching remarks. One netizen commented that this moment perfectly showcases the unique Chinese sense of security brought by genuine concern. Another user said the simple act of kindness was incredibly comforting and heartfelt.
Netizen ricbota left a moving comment: “This is what the world ought to look like. Amid the vast ocean, two strangers share a pure act of kindness. It stems from nothing but one human’s sincere care for another.”
Guo Shaochun, Chinese Consul General in Los Angeles, also echoed the warm sentiment in a post on X last Friday, emphasizing that kindness truly transcends all national boundaries.
