
China is grappling with a dual assault of extreme weather, as torrential rains trigger mass evacuations in the southwest while scorching heatwaves grip other regions—a pattern meteorologists link to a rapidly intensifying El Niño event threatening to prolong climate volatility through next year.
On Sunday, provincial authorities issued cascading alerts: the National Meteorological Center (NMC) activated an orange alert for heavy rain across Sichuan, Chongqing, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, and Guangdong. In Sichuan alone, over 64,000 residents have been preemptively relocated, while Chongqing has initiated a Level IV flood emergency. Concurrently, heat warnings remain active in Shanxi, Hubei, Sichuan, and Guangdong.
According to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific transitioned to El Niño conditions by May and have accelerated since June, now entering the monitoring threshold for a strong El Niño. Experts warn the likelihood of an “extremely strong” event is rising. The phenomenon—driven by abnormal Pacific warming—is expected to persist at least until spring 2027 and will reshape China’s seasonal outlook:
- Summer: Elevated typhoon frequency and intensity threatening coastal zones.
- Autumn/Winter: Increased precipitation across southern China.
- Next Spring/Summer: Heightened flood risks along the Yangtze River Basin and Jiangnan region.
Scientists note that a strengthened western Pacific subtropical high could funnel warm, moist air deeper into the mainland, colliding with northern cold fronts to fuel frequent extreme rainfall. With global temperatures hovering near record highs, researchers caution that this El Niño could rank among the most potent in modern observational history—and its most severe global impacts may not peak until 2027.
