According to a notice released by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) on Wednesday, Apple Intelligence has successfully completed the registration process required to provide mobile generative artificial intelligence services within China. Industry experts view this milestone as a crucial advancement toward the official debut of Apple’s AI offerings in the Chinese marketplace.

In an announcement posted to its official WeChat account, the CAC explained that, in order to foster innovation and ensure standardized deployment of generative AI, cybersecurity authorities have been systematically processing registrations for such services alongside relevant government departments. This effort operates under the Interim Measures for the Management of Generative AI Services, which came into force concurrently and stands as China’s inaugural dedicated regulatory framework for this technology. Public availability of AI services is contingent upon completing this filing procedure.

The regulator revealed that seven new generative AI services designed for mobile devices have been added to the registry, with Apple Intelligence among them. The filing shows that “Apple Intelligence,” submitted by Apple Technology Development (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., received formal approval on July 8 and is intended for integration across Apple hardware ecosystems. The roster of seven also features large AI models from prominent smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei, OPPO, Xiaomi, and Samsung.

Liu Dingding, a technology analyst, commented to the Global Timesthat securing this registration marks significant progress in Apple’s strategy to introduce its AI capabilities to users in China. Nevertheless, he cautioned that clearing this regulatory hurdle does not equate to an instantaneous launch, and the definitive schedule for Apple Intelligence’s rollout domestically remains undisclosed.

In a related development, an Alibaba spokesperson confirmed that the company will collaborate with Apple Intelligence regarding specific AI functionalities in China. The spokesperson noted that “Qwen will be integrated into Apple Intelligence experiences within iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS for users in China,” enabling seamless access to Qwen’s text and image comprehension and generation features without necessitating navigation between different applications.

Public sentiment on Chinese social media platform Weibo has been divided. While a segment of users expressed optimism about the prospective arrival of Apple Intelligence, others adopted a more reserved stance, drawing comparisons to the AI features already embedded in domestic smartphone brands. A number of users indicated they might be inclined to purchase a new iPhone once the service is formally activated.
