What is Sanfu Day in China? It’s not for everybody

As hospitals start offering various sanfu moxibustion services — a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment applied during the hottest days of summer to boost immunity against winter chills — officials and experts have emphasized that this therapy is only recommended for individuals with certain respiratory conditions and weak immunity, and it is not suitable for everyone.

Sanfu refers to the hottest period of the year in Chinese.

Liu Qingquan, president of Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, explained that sanfu moxibustion, which involves applying warm herbal patches to acupuncture points, originates from a Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) TCM formula that primarily includes white mustard seeds and dried ginger.

“The therapy was originally used to treat asthma and would leave blisters and marks on the skin at acupuncture points,” he said. “But now, we have improved the formula to reduce blistering while enhancing the effects on stimulating acupuncture points.”

Liu stated that sanfu moxibustion is part of a series of TCM methods aimed at boosting overall health to prepare for the cold season and protect against winter illnesses. The components of the patches can also be adjusted based on an individual’s health condition and local climate.

“However, not everyone is suitable for these treatments. They are recommended for individuals who tend to suffer from asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, allergic rhinitis, and recurrent colds, as well as those who have cold hands and feet,” he said.

This year, the Chinese lunar calendar indicates a longer-than-usual hot period that started on Monday and will last for 40 days.

Earlier this month, the Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine announced that over 800 medical institutions across the city are certified to provide sanfu moxibustion services.

“The treatment mainly targets individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses or allergic rhinitis, as well as children, the elderly, and those who frequently feel lethargic, catch colds, or cough,” it said.

It added that there are various moxibustion plasters available, such as a phlegm-dispelling patch for toddlers aged 2 and above and adults, and a cough-relieving patch designed for those aged 4 and above.

The administration also noted that all biological products used in sanfu moxibustion therapies must be registered with local drug regulators.
