Li Xiangyang, 30, a remarkable man from Hunan Province, has overcome incredible odds to provide for his wife and two children. Born into poverty, he lost both arms in an electric shock accident at just four years old, leaving his family burdened with debt. Despite his challenges, Li has never given up—instead, he has built a life of resilience, kindness, and determination.
A Childhood of Hardship and Early Determination
At just eight years old, Li began practicing calligraphy with his feet to help his struggling family. He sold his artwork to earn a little extra money, showing an early talent and strong work ethic. Though his life has been marked by adversity, he remains optimistic: “What has happened cannot be changed. I can only move forward. There is no need to dwell on it or complain,”he told Jimu News.
Delivering Food on a Unicycle—Using Just His Lips
With his children soon starting kindergarten and expenses rising, Li took on a part-time food delivery job to make ends meet. Balancing on a unicycle with a delivery box strapped to his back, he navigates city streets using only his lips to operate his phone, which is tied to his arm stumps.
Restaurant staff often assist by loading his orders, and many customers come down to pick up their food once they realize he has no arms. Li has encountered countless kind strangers, including a noodle shop owner who regularly gives him free meals and water, as well as fellow delivery riders who share time-saving tips.
In his first month, he completed nearly 200 orders, earning 1,300 yuan (US$180)—and he donated his entire first paycheck to charity, saying, “I’ve received so much help from others. Now, I want to pass on that kindness.”By August, he had improved his speed, delivering up to 40 orders a day.
Selling Calligraphy at Night to Support His Family
While delivery work helps, most of Li’s income still comes from selling calligraphy at night near tourist spots. Using a brush held between the toes of his right foot, he writes motivational phrases like “Heaven rewards diligence”and “Wealth.”
Though he hasn’t disclosed his exact earnings, the local government has supported him by providing a free stall and helping him secure public housing with an annual rent of just 2,000 yuan (US$280).
An Inspiration to Many
Li’s story is a testament to human resilience, hard work, and generosity. Despite losing his arms in childhood, he has built a life of purpose—delivering food, writing calligraphy with his feet, and giving back to society. His journey reminds us that with determination, even the greatest challenges can be overcome.
