A male passenger on a Hainan Airlines flight from Haikou to Changsha recently has been put under detention. He is alleged to have used his mobile phone to secretly take an upskirt video of a flight attendant without her permission. The incident was observed by a female official from the Hainan legal and political sphere, who reported this improper behavior. Once the plane landed, the police escorted the passenger off the aircraft, and he was later given a five – day administrative detention for infringing on privacy rights.

The flight took off from Haikou Meilan International Airport around noon on Wednesday. The male passenger was sitting in the front – row seat on the left side. He was chatting with the flight attendant. When the flight attendant was adjusting the lighting as he asked, a nearby passenger, Ms Liang, noticed that the man was stealthily holding his phone under the flight attendant’s skirt. Ms Liang promptly recorded evidence of what was happening.

After the flight attendant left, the male passenger rapidly checked the video he had taken and then went to the restroom for about ten minutes. Taking this chance, Ms Liang informed the flight attendant about the possible privacy violation and showed her the evidence.

When the plane reached Changsha Huanghua International Airport, the flight crew reported the incident to the captain. At first, the male passenger denied the accusations, but eventually, he handed over his phone, in which a four – minute video of the flight attendant was found. The authorities soon arrived and detained him. Hainan Airlines has declared that it has handed the case over to airport security for further probe and is collaborating with the police.
