A Love That Crossed Continents: How a Chinese Veteran and Armenian Woman Built a Life Together

A Modern Fairy Tale with Real Challenges

Though their love story spans over 6,000 kilometers and defies borders, the journey of Han Yanfeng—a Chinese veteran from Shanxi—and Zaruhi Gevorgyan—an Armenian from Gyumri—has been anything but simple. What began as a cultural exchange blossomed into a lifelong bond, proving that love, resilience, and shared humanity can triumph over adversity.

A Fateful Meeting in Shanghai

Their story ignited in 2017 during the 25th anniversary of China-Armenia diplomatic ties. Zaruhi, an exchange student at Shanghai International Studies University, crossed paths with Han, then a fitness instructor. What started as a casual cultural connection soon deepened into something far greater. When Zaruhi’s studies ended, their emotional airport farewell made Han realize: love knows no borders.

Building a Life Together—Against All Odds

Within months, Han left his job in Shanghai and moved to Armenia to be with Zaruhi. They married, started a family, and created a home together. But their cross-national journey was soon tested:

  • The Pandemic & War (2020): As Zaruhi was pregnant, COVID-19 lockdowns trapped them abroad. Then, the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict erupted, forcing the couple to flee their home under cover of darkness. “It was heartbreaking,”Han recalled. “Seeing families torn apart by war was unbearable.”
  • Healing Through Family: Amid chaos, love remained their anchor. Zaruhi’s traumatized brother found solace during a Chinese New Year visit to Han’s family in Linfen, where festive warmth and fireworks helped him begin healing. Over time, their families grew deeply bonded through empathy and mutual respect.

A Bridge Between Nations

Thanks to the China-Armenia visa-free agreement, the couple now travels freely between their homelands, sharing their life with the world through social media. Their TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook videos—filled with cultural surprises and heartwarming daily moments—have inspired thousands.

“People in both our countries are kind-hearted,”one follower wrote. “I hope the world can be simpler—I want to visit Armenia someday.”

As bilateral ties strengthen (including the 2023 launch of direct flights and the South-North Road project), Zaruhi—now studying Chinese at Yerevan State University—sees herself as a cultural bridge.

“China values peace,”she says. “If the world shared that kindness, it would be a better place. I hope China grows even stronger; its prosperity helps small nations like ours thrive.”

❤️ A Love Forged Along the Belt and Road

Han and Zaruhi’s story is proof that even across continents, compassion, peace, and human connection can conquer any distance.
