New visa plan proposed to gives Chinese 90-day visa-free access

Starting in January 2025, South Africa will implement a new Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) designed to simplify the entry process for tourists from China and India.

According to South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs, this initiative is aimed at boosting travel to the country. In 2023, only 93,000 Chinese tourists visited South Africa, despite over 100 million outbound trips from China that year, as reported by VisaGuide.World.

As explained by the Department of Home Affairs, under the TTOS, selected tour operators from China and India will have the opportunity to register with the Department. After undergoing a thorough vetting process and taking responsibility for the groups they handle, these operators will be allowed to submit group visa applications. This is the first time South Africa will process visa applications from Chinese and Indian tourists in this manner.

The TTOS applications will be handled by a dedicated team of adjudicators to ensure quicker and more streamlined processing, addressing the bureaucratic challenges that have previously hindered South Africa’s tourism industry.

Earlier this year, in May, the South African government revealed plans to enhance the visa application process, particularly targeting Indian tourists. Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille announced the launch of an E-Visa system, while the Ministry of Tourism also suggested introducing a 90-day visa waiver for travelers from both India and China.
