Customs officials at West Kowloon Station have apprehended a foreign male traveller on suspicion of smuggling cannabis into Chinese territory by concealing the illicit drug in his underwear. The incident unfolded during routine inbound passenger screening operations conducted by Chinese customs personnel at the border checkpoint.
According to official customs accounts, inspectors first singled out the man for further checks after observing unusual behavioural red flags. The traveller failed to submit any customs declarations and displayed suspicious mannerisms while navigating the inspection zone. He was seen constantly glancing around his surroundings and carried minimal personal baggage, behaviour that prompted officers to initiate a targeted physical examination.
During the body search, customs staff suspected the individual was hiding contraband on his person. A thorough follow-up inspection uncovered a plastic pouch stashed in the man’s underwear, which held suspected cannabis plant matter. The seized parcel emitted a noticeable unique scent and had a total gross weight of 11.2 grams.
Laboratory testing was subsequently conducted on the confiscated substance, which verified that it contained tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the primary psychoactive ingredient present in cannabis products. The entire case has since been transferred to the customs anti-smuggling division to undergo comprehensive follow-up inquiries and legal proceedings.
Chinese customs authorities have issued a public reminder to all incoming travellers regarding the country’s strict drug regulations. Cannabis is legally designated as a controlled narcotic substance within China’s legal system. Per national criminal laws, any act of smuggling, trading, transporting or producing drugs constitutes a criminal offence, with punitive measures applicable irrespective of the quantity of drugs involved.
This incident serves as a critical warning for international travellers. Individuals planning to enter China are urged to familiarise themselves with local drug legislation in advance. Cannabis remains strictly prohibited nationwide, and violations of relevant drug laws will lead to severe legal repercussions.
