A violent knife assault broke out in Hong Kong on the morning of Monday, August 10, leaving several members of the public wounded. A male perpetrator reportedly ran amok chasing pedestrians with a blade outside a private residential compound in the area.
Multiple emergency calls were placed to the police at approximately 9:24 a.m., alerting authorities to a knife-wielding man pursuing passers-by in the vicinity of Baguio Villa, located at 550 Victoria Road. Law enforcement officers rushed to the scene immediately and took the suspect into custody without further incident.
Police identified the detained individual as a non-ethnic Chinese male in his twenties, who was found completely shirtless and barefoot at the scene. Investigators seized a bloodied fruit knife at the location, which is strongly believed to be the weapon used in the assault.
Two people sustained physical injuries in the attack, according to official police accounts. One foreign domestic worker suffered a stab wound to her back, while a residential security guard was hurt when he tried to stop the assailant. Both victims remained conscious following the incident and were transported to hospital by ambulance to receive professional medical care.
Online-circulated video footage captured the bearded, shirtless South Asian suspect chasing civilians with a fruit knife. The footage shows him later targeting a security guard, who tumbled to the ground during a physical tussle with the man. Additional video clips documented the bare-chested and barefoot suspect first pursuing a foreign male pedestrian, before abruptly turning to assault the nearby security staff member.
During the violent confrontation, the security guard fell to the ground amid the chaos, as a female bystander screamed out of terror. A second security officer attempted to intervene and defuse the situation. The footage eventually shows the scene settling down: the suspect stood idle nearby while other security staff assisted the injured guard to his feet. Prior to police officers’ arrival, the suspect had already been restrained by on-site security personnel and ordinary members of the public.
Police confirmed that the suspect was a resident of Tower 47 at Baguio Villa. At present, the exact motivation for the violent attack has yet to be determined and remains under active investigation. The case has been officially categorised as a wounding offence, with the Western District Criminal Investigation Team leading all follow-up inquiries.
Aside from the human injuries, authorities are also probing whether the suspect harmed an animal prior to launching the pedestrian attack. A search of the suspect’s residential unit uncovered an injured cat with a laceration on the right side of its head. The injured feline was handed over to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to undergo veterinary assessment and treatment. Police are currently verifying whether the cat was injured before the suspect left his apartment to carry out the public assault.
The suspect’s mother arrived at the scene after being informed of her son’s arrest. Witnesses saw her in tears as police officers escorted the suspect into official custody.
The violent incident has sparked shock among local residents of Pok Fu Lam. Police are continuing to comprehensively investigate all circumstances surrounding the assault, including probing whether the suspect’s potential mental health issues contributed to the violent outburst.
