During the 2026 ITB Travel Trade Show, local authorities announced that Ethiopia intends to launch a seven-day transit visa exemption scheme for Chinese nationals, with a tentative launch date as early as July this year.
This official news was released by Dr. Aziza Geleta, the Deputy Chief of Ethiopia’s Diplomatic Mission in China. Meanwhile, senior management from Ethiopian Airlines verified that relevant preparatory work is already in progress.
Once the new policy comes into force, Chinese travelers in transit via Ethiopia will be permitted to stay in the country for a maximum of seven days without a valid visa. This policy change will greatly facilitate tourists to visit Addis Ababa, the nation’s capital, as well as various local scenic spots before they proceed with their subsequent trips.
This initiative is also projected to further consolidate Ethiopia’s status as a key aviation hub that connects China with Africa, Europe, the Middle East and South America.
At present, Ethiopian Airlines runs regular passenger flights connecting Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Hong Kong with Ethiopia. The carrier also plans to expand its flight capacity if passenger demand grows after the implementation of the visa-free rule.
To better serve Chinese travelers, the airline has already rolled out Chinese-language support services at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. Additionally, passengers with a layover duration of 8 to 24 hours are eligible for complimentary hotel accommodation during their transit period.
In anticipation of the upcoming rise in tourist arrivals, Ethiopian Airlines Holidays has unveiled a series of customized travel packages. These tours highlight Ethiopia’s distinctive tourism resources, including its time-honored history, diverse wildlife, unique local culture and thrilling adventure programs.
Upon official approval, this new visa policy will turn Ethiopia into one of the most traveler-friendly entry points to Africa for Chinese visitors. It will also enable ordinary flight layovers to be transformed into immersive week-long African travel experiences.
