As reported by Xinhua News Agency, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), whose headquarters is located in Montreal, Canada, made an announcement on Friday regarding new regulations governing the carriage of power banks by airline passengers. Specifically, the new rules restrict each passenger to carrying a maximum of two power banks and prohibit the recharging of such devices during flights.
These new specifications, which apply to lithium battery-powered power banks, have taken effect immediately. Notably, flight crew members are still allowed to carry and use power banks in line with the operational requirements of the aircraft, a provision that ensures the smooth conduct of in-flight operations.
In a news release issued by ICAO, the organisation stated that its Dangerous Goods Panel had provided professional expert advice to the ICAO’s standard-setting bodies. Subsequent to a comprehensive assessment, independent technical experts from the ICAO Air Navigation Commission gave their endorsement to the recommendations aimed at amending the Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air.
The recommendations were officially approved by the ICAO Council, which comprises 36 member states. ICAO further noted that an addendum to the aforementioned technical instructions will be distributed to all 193 of its member states to ensure uniform implementation of the new regulations.
