Early on Friday, January 30, two unemployed South Asian men—aged 25 and 26—were taken into custody by police in Tuen Mun on suspicion of committing arson and causing criminal damage. The arrests followed two separate fires that occurred within roughly an hour of each other, destroying at least eight vehicles.
One suspect is reportedly a Hong Kong permanent resident, while the other holds a “going-out pass.” Authorities say they are still investigating the motive behind the alleged offenses but have stated there is currently no indication linking the incidents to land reclamation issues or organized crime.
The first fire was reported at approximately 5:00 a.m. outside Wo Choi House in Wo Tin Estate, where a motorcycle, a handcart, and three bicycles were deliberately set on fire. There were no casualties.
About an hour and a half later, at 6:33 a.m., a more serious blaze broke out in an open-air parking area on Tong Hang Road in Po Tong Ha, close to Wo Tin Estate. The fire quickly spread among several vehicles, producing large plumes of black smoke and loud bangs. Firefighters arrived with hoses and a breathing apparatus unit, successfully containing the blaze by 7:15 a.m.
In total, at least eight vehicles—including private sedans, light commercial vans, and a taxi—were either destroyed or severely damaged. About ten local residents self-evacuated as a precaution. The Fire Services Department has classified the second fire as suspicious.
A taxi driver who was parked nearby recalled hearing a sudden explosion before noticing flames spreading across the lot. He mentioned having no known conflicts with others in the area.
Investigators believe the two fires are likely connected, and further inquiries are underway. The two men are expected to be formally charged with arson and property damage pending the outcome of the investigation.
