A teenage boy from Jiangxi, China, who went missing in Cambodia, is now at the center of a dramatic case that has captured nationwide attention.
Initially feared to be a trafficking or kidnapping victim, the young man, Ye Wenbin, was revealed by police to have left the country voluntarily to participate in telecom fraud. Authorities report that both he and an accomplice have since returned to China and are in criminal detention for illegally crossing the border and engaging in online scams.
This revelation has upended earlier fears. Ye’s mother had traveled to Cambodia alone in a desperate search, while the Chinese embassy in Phnom Penh had repeatedly pressed local authorities for help in finding him.
