Recent reports indicate that WeChat is testing an upgraded chat history backup feature, now allowing users to save their data to external devices like USB drives. The company confirmed it is conducting a limited trial of this functionality.
Currently, WeChat only permits backups to computers. However, the new version will let users directly back up their chat history to portable storage devices (e.g., USB drives or external hard disks) through the mobile app. Additional enhancements include the ability to create and manage multiple backup files, as well as support for automatic backups. The feature is being rolled out gradually to select users.
To access the updated tool, navigate to: WeChat Settings > General > Chat History & Migration > Backup & Restore. If your account is part of the test group, you’ll see new options such as “Back up to computer, USB, or other storage devices” and “Enable automatic backup.”
