This minuscule bridge suspended in the clouds was built in 1987 and has a way of making visitors feel as if they’ve stepped into a fairytale. So much so that it has earned the nickname ‘Fairyland Bridge’. However, as these images reveal, traversing it requires a fair amount of courage. Officially named Buxian Bridge, it links two towering granite peaks within a gorge in the extraordinary, UNESCO – listed Mount Huangshan region of China. Visitors reach it through tunnels on either side. The bridge spans just a few metres but is perched at an elevation of 1,700 feet or 518 metres, with a deep abyss yawning beneath. Tripadvisor user ‘Hoben01’ from California advised those suffering from acrophobia (fear of heights) not to look down. But the payoff for making the journey there is a one – of – a – kind photo – taking chance. As reviewer ‘elvi6’ from Vienna puts it, ‘I felt like a princess in Middle – earth. It gives tourists the sensation of being “lost” in a kind of fairytale that has materialized.’ She further remarks that the bridge is an essential stop in the area. UNESCO points out that Huangshan, located in Anhui Province, is renowned as ‘the most beautiful mountain in China’ and has a magnetic allure for tourists, poets, painters, and photographers who make a pilgrimage to the site.
