Mozilla has officially announced the termination of its collaboration with Beijing Mofang Huohu Information Technology Co., Ltd. (“Beijing Firefox”), the firm handling localized Firefox services in mainland China. While the Firefox browser itself will remain fully functional, several critical services— including Firefox Accounts, data synchronization, and Chinese community platforms—will be discontinued by September 29, 2025.
This decision reflects a strategic shift for Mozilla in China. As stated in a notice released yesterday, the partnership was mutually dissolved earlier this year on May 8. Following this, Beijing Firefox will withdraw entirely from all Mozilla-related operations in China, including the use of licensed trademarks, domains, and digital assets.
Services to Be Discontinued
For years, Mozilla relied on Beijing Firefox to manage local operations, such as Chinese-language websites, community forums, and account infrastructure. The upcoming shutdowns include:
- Firefox Accounts (accounts.firefox.com.cn): User registration has already been disabled. All account data will be permanently deleted after September 29, and encrypted sync data will cease updating before deletion.
- Firefox China Official Site (firefox.com.cn): Download links have been removed; users are now redirected to Mozilla’s global site for software downloads.
- Mozilla Community Portal (mozilla.com.cn): Forums and new registrations are closed. Users must save their posts or contributions by the September 29 deadline.
- Firefox China Homepage (home.firefoxchina.cn): No further content updates will be published after the cutoff date.
Firefox Browser Unaffected
Despite these changes, Mozilla clarified that the Firefox browser will continue operating normally in China, with uninterrupted updates and full functionality. Users can still download the browser directly from firefox.com. The company also affirmed its commitment to complying with China’s data regulations, including the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) and Data Security Law, ensuring all personal data is erased in accordance with legal standards.
