On November 21, at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, an Indian national from Zangnan—a region India calls Arunachal Pradesh—was held for more than 18 hours during a transit. The passenger, Pema Wang Thongdok, was en route from London to Japan with a scheduled three-hour layover. She said immigration officers deemed her Indian passport invalid because her birthplace was listed as “Arunachal Pradesh,” a designation China does not recognize and refers to as Zangnan. Her passport was confiscated, boarding was denied despite a valid Japanese visa, and she was released only after the Indian Consulate in Shanghai intervened.
