A recent video that went viral on Chinese social media has sparked intense debate, capturing a scene in which a foreign man violently assaults a police officer and attacks a Chinese civilian in broad daylight, before being held back by onlookers.

In the clip, the man can be seen punching a traffic policeman and then turning to strike a nearby Chinese man. The scene quickly turns chaotic until several passers‑by intervene and manage to restrain him. At one point, an elderly woman at the scene is heard expressing her outrage, asking, “Is nobody going to do anything? How could this foreigner act like this?”

Based on the officer’s uniform, he appears to be from the traffic police, indicating the incident may have taken place during a traffic‑related duty. Nevertheless, the precise reason for the clash remains unknown, and as yet no official explanation has been given about what triggered the violence.

Even without confirmed details, many internet users reacted strongly, underlining that no matter the context, assaulting a police officer is wholly intolerable. According to Chinese law, such an attack on law enforcement constitutes a serious crime, and public sentiment has made it clear that foreign nationals must obey the same legal standards as everyone else.

The episode has once again brought wider conversations to the fore — covering public safety, respect for authority, and the obligations of foreigners residing in or visiting China. Many are urging the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the case is dealt with strictly according to the law.
