Nantong, China– Magnus Loft Helgosson, a Swedish product manager at Scania Manufacturing (China) in Nantong, unexpectedly became a hero on August 17 after rescuing a woman from drowning in Zilang Park.
The incident occurred around 5 pm when Zeng, a visitor to the park, fell into the water. Helgosson, who happened to be cycling nearby, immediately sprang into action—dropping his bike and diving into the lake to reach her. With strong swimming skills, he quickly pulled Zeng to safety and ensured she was stable before discreetly leaving the scene. Shortly after, park security, police, and medics arrived, and Zeng was hospitalized for further care.
Meanwhile, Zeng’s family, who live over 2,000 kilometers away in Yunnan Province, rushed to Nantong on August 19 to support her. As they cared for her recovery, they also began searching for their mysterious rescuer. Thanks to tips from Guanshan Community staff—who noted Helgosson’s frequent visits to the park, his nearby residence, and his foreign background—the Swedish expat was quickly identified.
Three days after the rescue, the two families were reunited. “We’re relieved she’s doing well,” said Helgosson, who moved to Nantong with his family in 2024. He explained that his wife first spotted the struggling woman in the water, prompting his rapid response. “There was no time to think—I just reacted. Thankfully, I’m a strong swimmer.”
Despite language differences, Helgosson’s bravery created an emotional bond between the families. He comforted them, saying the worst was over and better days lay ahead. In gratitude, Zeng’s brother extended a heartfelt invitation to visit Yunnan, expressing deep appreciation for the stranger who saved his sister’s life.
