On Thursday (December 11), the UK Foreign Office issued an updated travel advisory for Hong Kong, cautioning that dual nationals—such as those holding either a British citizen passport or a British National (Overseas) passport—might not be entitled to consular assistance when arriving in the city.
According to the revised guidance, Hong Kong does not acknowledge dual citizenship. Consequently, travelers who use a British citizen passport or BN(O) passport to enter Hong Kong could still be treated by local officials as Chinese nationals if they are also recognized as having Chinese citizenship.
Under such circumstances, the British Consulate-General may be unable to provide consular support, the advisory warned.
The Foreign Office further advised that anyone who has officially given up Chinese nationality should bring appropriate documentation proving this status when visiting Hong Kong.
