At 8:30 am on Wednesday, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) elevated its heavy rainfall emergency response from Level IV to Level III, as stated in an official WeChat announcement.
Later that day, at 10 am, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a blue rainstorm alert. The forecast warns of heavy to torrential rains across parts of Gansu (northwest China), Sichuan (southwest China), and Chongqing (municipality in southwest China). From 2 pm Wednesday to 2 pm Thursday, certain areas in Sichuan and Chongqing may experience rainfall exceeding 100-140 millimeters in a single period, the NMC added.
In a separate warning, the NMC maintained a yellow heat alert at 6 am Wednesday, signaling continued extreme temperatures. Parts of southern Shaanxi (northwest China), southern Shanxi (north China), and central China are expected to see temperatures surpassing 40°C (104°F).
Meanwhile, ground surface temperatures spiked to over 70°C (158°F) in regions like Henan (central China) on Tuesday, Weather China reported.
