A luxury lounge at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport has drawn criticism after implementing a strict entry policy: visitors must demonstrate personal assets exceeding 20 million yuan (approximately US$2.8 million) to gain access. The lounge claims the rule aims to “maintain service standards.”
The controversy emerged on July 17 when a China Merchants Bank “Golden Sunflower” cardholder inquired about using the international First Class Lounge. Despite holding the prestigious bank membership—which requires a minimum monthly balance of 500,000 yuan (US$70,000)—she was informed she would need to verify assets of at least 20 million yuan, excluding property and vehicles.
The woman, who had booked an economy-class ticket, expressed bewilderment at the high threshold, questioning why affluent individuals would rely on reward points for lounge access instead of purchasing business-class tickets outright.
Airport staff explained that lounge entry is typically granted to first- or business-class passengers or those willing to pay 600 yuan (US$85) for a single-use pass. For Golden Sunflower cardholders, however, asset verification is mandatory, and reservations are required.
China Merchants Bank confirmed the policy took effect in June 2024, prompting widespread debate over its fairness and practicality.
