The Japanese government is expected to ease some visa requirements for Chinese citizens traveling to Japan by broadening the eligibility criteria for multiple-entry visas, according to several government officials. These visas allow holders to visit Japan repeatedly within a specified period.

Currently, multiple-entry visas are issued to individuals traveling for business purposes, as well as to intellectuals and cultural figures. They are available in four categories, with validity ranging from one to ten years. In addition, these visas can also be granted to the spouses and children of eligible individuals. The government is now considering extending the 10-year visa option to other family members as well.

Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya is planning to visit China later this year to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. During their meeting, Iwaya is expected to inform Wang of the planned changes to visa rules.

In November, China reinstated its short-term visa waiver program for Japanese nationals. It has urged Japan to simplify its entry procedures in line with the principle of reciprocity.
