On the night of October 20th, at approximately 10 p.m., two international friends from El Salvador, Raul and Danilo, were exploring Nanchang Street in Wuxi’s Liangxi District. As they approached the Dagong Bridge, they witnessed a couple in a heated dispute. Suddenly, the distraught woman threw her phone aside and dashed towards the river, leaping into the water with the man swiftly following her.

Observing this, Raul immediately sprang into action, diving into the river to grab the man’s hand and bringing him to safety on the riverbank. Without hesitation, he plunged back into the frigid waters to assist the woman. At the time, the temperature was just 16°C (approximately 60°F), and the water felt even colder. Fearing for Raul’s stamina, Danilo joined the effort by jumping in as well.

Meanwhile, onlookers alerted the authorities. Officers from both the Nanchang Street Police Station and the Qingming Bridge Police Station, part of the Liangxi Branch of the Wuxi Public Security Bureau, rapidly arrived at the scene. Collaborating with the crowd, they utilized life rings and ropes to successfully retrieve all four individuals from the river. Thanks to their prompt rescue efforts, the couple emerged with no serious injuries.

Reflecting on the incident, Raul mentioned, “Due to my job, I’m quite a proficient swimmer, so I was confident in my ability to help while ensuring my own safety.” He added, “Even though it was extremely cold, there was no time to think about that when witnessing someone in distress.”

Danilo shared his sentiments: “Wuxi has provided me with an incredible experience. I have felt the warmth and kindness of its people, making foreigners feel genuinely welcome—almost as if it were home. That’s likely why I didn’t hesitate to assist,” he expressed with emotion.

On October 30th, the Liangxi Branch of the Wuxi Public Security Bureau, the Liangxi District Foundation for Courageous Acts, and the city’s Immigration Division collectively honored the two foreign friends with certificates of bravery. For Raul and Danilo, extending a helping hand comes naturally, regardless of location. Their valiant actions not only embody the spirit of courage but also propagate kindness and positivity throughout society. Love transcends boundaries, and we are thankful for every brave and compassionate heart.
