Beijing, November 19, 2025 — China’s National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a blue cold wave alert on Monday as frigid air sweeps across the nation, bringing fierce winds and drastic temperature plunges. Authorities are scrambling to safeguard energy supplies, agricultural operations, and daily life in affected regions, with forecasts predicting intensified cold air activity over the next decade.

Forecast: Severe Chill in Southern China

The NMC warns that a major cold wave will persist into Tuesday, particularly hammering areas south of the Huanghuai region—which spans parts of Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shandong provinces. Most of these regions will endure a 6–10°C drop in average temperatures, with localized areas experiencing plunges as severe as 12–14°C.

Monday’s NMC update highlights that from 8 PM Monday to 8 AM Wednesday, northern and eastern Sichuan, Chongqing, and adjacent zones will face 6–8°C temperature declines due to a potent cold front.

Government Alerts & Public Advisories

China’s Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) echoed the NMC’s warnings in a WeChat notice, urging vigilance in regions where temperatures may plummet by over 14°C. The MEM also issued safety guidelines to help the public prepare for the deep freeze.

Agricultural Protections in Action

Farmers and agricultural bureaus across China are implementing emergency measures to shield crops from the freeze:

  • Jiangsu Province (East China): Authorities in Donghai County are mobilizing combine harvesters to accelerate rice collection before frost damage sets in. Local farms are also reinforcing greenhouse insulation.
  • Shanxi Province (North China): In Taiyuan, a major agricultural market has stockpiled winter vegetables (e.g., potatoes, cabbage) sourced locally, while importing perishables like cucumbers and tomatoes from other provinces to stabilize supplies. The market manager confirmed proactive efforts to secure heaters and thermal blankets for vulnerable produce.

Ongoing Monitoring

With cold wave alerts active and more frigid air masses expected, officials stress readiness for potential disruptions to energy grids and farming. The NMC urges residents to monitor updates and adhere to safety protocols.
