The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou Province, southwestern China, will officially open to traffic on September 28 after over three years of construction, local authorities announced on Wednesday.

Spanning 2,890 meters with a main span of 1,420 meters, the bridge stands 625 meters above the river—making it the world’s tallest and the largest-span bridge constructed in a mountainous region, the provincial government said.

Zhang Yin, head of the provincial transport department, highlighted key technological advancements, including breakthroughs in wind resistance and high-altitude engineering. The project secured 21 authorized patents, with several innovations now integrated into China’s national bridge construction standards.

Guizhou is home to more than 32,000 completed or under-construction bridges, including three of the world’s tallest. Nearly half of the planet’s 100 highest bridges are located in the province.
