On September 3, internet police in Xiangyang discovered that a 47-year-old netizen named Meng had posted defamatory and inappropriate comments about the “September 3rd Military Parade” during a live broadcast of CCTV’s “80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Anti-Japanese War.” In addition, when other users expressed patriotic sentiments online, Meng insulted and mocked them, and spread rumors that provoked widespread anger among internet users.

Authorities promptly launched an investigation. Upon being detained, Meng admitted to his unlawful behavior. His remarks were found to have disrespected national and ethnic sentiments, undermined patriotic feelings, and damaged support for the military, resulting in significant negative social impact. He is suspected of the crime of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” On September 4, the Zaozhuang (possibly a typo for Zao Yang) police administratively detained Meng in accordance with the law.

The internet police reminded the public: The great spirit of the Anti-Japanese War is a cornerstone of the Chinese nation’s spirit. Any attempts to distort or desecrate the history of the war, slander veterans, or harm patriotic sentiment will be met with severe legal consequences.
