China Experiences Widespread Extreme Heatwave, Breaking Temperature Records

Beijing, July 24 (Xinhua)​​ – The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) reported on Wednesday that ​152 national-level meteorological stations​ across China have recorded temperatures exceeding ​40°C​ since early July. The ongoing heatwave is expected to persist, with its ​duration and intensity potentially surpassing historical records​ for this time of year.

​Key Statistics from the CMA:​​

  • Since ​July 11, temperatures of ​40°C and above​ have been concentrated in:
    • Southeastern ​Shaanxi Province​
    • Central and western ​Hubei Province​
    • Northeastern and western ​Chongqing Municipality​
    • Eastern ​Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region​
    • Western ​Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region​
  • Affected area: ​407,000 square kilometers​

​Record-Breaking Temperatures:​​

  • ​102 stations​ set ​new July daily temperature records.
  • ​32 stations​ broke their ​all-time historical records, including:
    • ​Dongkan, Turpan, Xinjiang: ​48.7°C​
    • ​Xingping, Shaanxi: ​43.1°C​
    • ​Badong, Hubei: ​42.9°C​

​Forecast for the Coming Weeks:​​

  • ​Late July: Intermittent heatwaves will continue in:
    • Northern China’s southern regions
    • The ​Huanghuai region​
    • Southern China
  • ​Early to mid-August: High temperatures will affect:
    • ​Hebei, Shandong, Anhui​
    • ​Sichuan-Chongqing region​
    • Eastern ​Northwest China​
    • Western ​Inner Mongolia​ and ​Xinjiang​
  • ​Some areas​ (central-eastern China, central China, southwestern China’s eastern regions, and southern Xinjiang) may see temperatures ​exceeding historical averages, though the heatwave’s duration is ​less likely​ to surpass past extremes.

The CMA warns that the prolonged high temperatures could have significant impacts on public health, agriculture, and energy consumption.
