A 29-year-old Chinese live-streamer, nicknamed “Little Grass Drifting North,” has saved 1.3 million yuan (180,000)insixyearsbyspendinglessthan1 per meal. Based in Beijing, he works for an internet company and runs a self-media business.

His frugality stems from childhood: his mother’s serious illness left the family in debt, teaching him the value of money. “I felt compelled to save,” he said, aiming to avoid reliance on others.

Monthly expenses are minimal—rent (350)andhome−cookedmeals(under70)—but his health has suffered, with high cholesterol and poor circulation. His goal: 2 million yuan to buy a home and car for his parents, enabling family travel.

Online reactions are mixed. While some praise his discipline, others question the lifestyle’s toll: “Impressive, but is it worth living so tensely?”
