On Tuesday, China’s National Meteorological Center (NMC) extended its yellow heat alert for northern areas, forecasting temperatures surpassing 40°C in parts of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
The NMC reported that daytime highs above 35°C were expected across a broad swath of China, including:
- Beijing, Tianjin, and central-southern Hebei Province
- Shandong Province (East China), Henan Province (Central China), and Inner Mongolia (North China)
- Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang Provinces (Northeast China)
- The Junggar Basin and southern Xinjiang Basin (Northwest China)
- Guangdong Province (South China) and Fujian Province (East China)
In certain zones—such as central-southern Beijing and Tianjin, parts of Hebei, northern Shandong, eastern Inner Mongolia, and the southern Xinjiang Basin—temperatures could climb to 37–39°C, with isolated areas potentially exceeding 40°C.
Meanwhile, the Beijing Meteorological Service upgraded its alert to orange, warning of 38°C heat and advising residents to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
The heatwave coincided with the first day of Beijing’s senior high school entrance exams. The Beijing Municipal Education Commission urged students, parents, and staff to stay hydrated and take heat precautions, as temperatures were expected to remain high through Wednesday.
