China’s expanding visa-free policy has triggered a surge in international tourism, with travelers flocking to the country—and many are packing light to make room for souvenirs. On global social media, one piece of advice stands out: “Bring an empty suitcase!”

Among the top destinations is Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, a vibrant metropolis known for blending sightseeing with high-tech shopping. At Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, outbound travelers are often seen laden with Chinese-made products, particularly drones, tablets, AI-powered smart glasses, and portable translators. These real-time, offline translation devices have become essential for navigating local markets.

A major hotspot is Huaqiangbei, the world’s largest electronics market, which has seen a 50% increase in foreign visitors since early 2025, now hosting over 7,000 daily international guests. Shopping here is seamless: purchases can be made upstairs and shipped downstairs, with services like currency exchange, tax refunds, and international shipping readily available. Some tourists even enjoy a 10% discount through tax rebates.

A local drone store reports selling 50 units weekly, half to foreign buyers. To manage the influx, Huaqiangbei has recruited a team of volunteers, including Andy, who notes that the area’s appeal lies not just in affordability but in its vast product range—from budget to premium electronics.

China continues to ease travel restrictions, with a new visa-free trial starting June 1, 2025, allowing citizens of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay to visit for up to 30 days for business, tourism, or family visits. This expands unilateral visa-free access to 43 countries, including the first Latin American nations.

With its tech-savvy offerings and streamlined shopping, Shenzhen is fast becoming a must-visit destination for global travelers.
