Q: The recently signed “China-Malaysia Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement” has become a hot topic in both countries. How does the embassy comment on this?
During President Xi Jinping’s recent state visit to Malaysia, the two nations signed a Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement, elevating bilateral ties to a ”Golden 50 Years” of strategic partnership. The pact will take effect after domestic ratification, initially lasting 5 years with automatic renewal for subsequent 5-year terms.
Under the agreement:
- Citizens of either country can enter the other for up to 30 days per visit without a visa.
- A cumulative limit of 90 days applies within any 180-day period, excluding stays under visas, residence permits, or APEC Business Travel Cards.
- Foreigners exceeding the 90-day limit within 180 days will be ineligible for visa-free entry, with exceptions for shorter stays if remaining days are insufficient.
- The same rules apply to Chinese travelers in Malaysia.
The agreement aims to boost people-to-people exchanges, strengthen cooperation, and advance the China-Malaysia Community with a Shared Future. The Chinese Embassy in Malaysia remains committed to fostering bilateral ties.
